PARKER:As soon as we return from the negotiation, I go to my room and begin to draft the contract. I work untill late at night and again early the following morning.
I feel a little light-headed and decide to take a short stroll through the neighborhood of the hotel. It's the home of many legations.
I work through the early afternoon and at three o'clock call Mr. Goodwin. I tell him I've finished the contract and that it is ready for his signature.
He comes to my room and puts his name to it without so much as glancing at it. I ask him if it is custom to sign things without reading them.
and he only simles at me and says,"I didn't bring you to beijing to check up on you, David, I brought you to write the contract. It's your business, and I trust you."
I hire a taxi and drive to Li Wei's office, Her Secretary smiles at me as I enter her office building.
PARKER: Good afternoon. I wonder if Madam Li is in her office this afternoon.
SEC: No. I'm sorry. She's at a meeting.
PARKER: Well' I'll leave this for her then. Will you please see that she gets it as soon as she comes back?
SEC. By all means. Thank you.
PARKER: In the taxi returning me to the hotel. I begin to reflect upon the contract. I think of the name of the commodity and the specifications and the dates and ports of shipment ... of quantities and terms and conditions, Everything seems in order.
Then suddenly,I turn my mind to the price. What did i write as the unit price? was it USD128? Suddenly, my mind goes blank. I feel faint. I feel sweaty. I can't remember having written USD128! I have written USD125! I'm almost sure I have written USD125!
I try to tell the taxi drive to hurry. but he doesn't understand English. Why is he driving so slowly? Hurry! Hurry! I say, Once I am back in my room, I rush to my portfolio. It is on my bed.
Oh my God! It is true! I have written USD125 as the unit price! I sit down hard on my bed and call Mr. Goodwin and tell him what I have done.
I expect him to send me back to Vancouver at once and with curses on my head as well. but he takes it calmly. All he says is."I will call li Wei in the morning. Relax David. Have a hot shower, Take a nap"
However I am too upset. I refuse to go to dinner, I climb into bed. I watch television until the programmes end, I take some aspirin and try to sleep.
In the morning. I am feverish and feeling nauseated. I call the hotel office and they send me a doctor. He's a young man and has a good bedside manner.
DOCTOR: What seems to be your problem?

PARKER: Not at all. I'm 34.
DOCTOR: Thirty-four. Well, you're fit as a fiddle, as they say in America.

DOCTOR: Now I've written out a presciption for you to take to the hotel clinic. Better still. I'll take it myself and have someone from the clinic bring the medicine to you.
So far as I can see, you're a bit run down, over-worked. You've been working hard and not eating properly.
PARKER:So take two bills three times a day after meals, go to bed and get plenty of rest.
DOCTOR: How did you know?
